GREAT BRITAIN TRANSPLANT CYCLING TEAM
I have coached the Great Britain Transplant Cycling Team since 2009. The team is a truly unique collection of cyclists. All have had life supporting organ transplants, either heart, kidney, liver or bone marrow, without which they wouldn't be alive, let alone riding bikes. It has been said the team is the most exclusive cycling club in the world you would never want to be a member of. It exists to promote awareness of the benefits of organ donation and transplantation by riding and racing bikes. A link to NHS Organ Donation is here
Based all over the UK, from Newcastle to Southampton, from Northern Ireland to Scotland, the current squad of riders includes men and women between the ages of 12 to 70 plus. Most race regularly for clubs and come together to form the GBTx Cycling Team for training and competition, specifically the bi-annual World Transplant Games, the next edition being held in Dresden, Germany in 2025.
Anybody who has had a life supporting organ transplant and meets the nationality eligibility to compete for Great Britain in accordance with the World Transplant Games Federation can join the squad and attend training sessions. The race team is selected from riders based on performances at the British and European Transplant Games and other non transplant competitive events.
Although the backed by Transplant Sport UK, a registered charity, the team are entirely self funded.
If you'd like to know more about the team or have had a transplant and wish to attend future training sessions, please get in touch via the contact form
