Who’d have thought it? Riding a bike for health, fitness & well-being? Next you'll be saying you want to enjoy it too. Whatever next?
Lots of people use cycling as an enjoyable adjunct to their health, fitness and well-being regime. The growth in cyclists who don’t want to race but do want to ride in social groups has been huge, often helped by HSBC Breeze and growing local cycling and triathlon clubs. There’s a growing Strava community and more people engaging in static bike work using turbo trainers, Zwift, Peloton, Wattbikes and the like.
You don’t have to be a racing cyclist to benefit from coaching. Having structure and accountability with a program aimed at improving health, fitness or well-being is likely to make it more effective and having support and encouragement to make sure you’re on track is vital.
Cycling is a fantastic activity to aid weight management (power measurement will give you a precise calorie usage) and it will support cardiovascular improvement and rehabilitation from injury or illness. It’s well established that physical exercise is good for mental health and, anecdotally, a few of my friends have credited riding a bike with saving their sanity.
