If you’re undertaking a sportive or challenge ride like LEJOG or London to Paris, you're likely to be interested in riding for long distances and in comfort. You're principle aim is going to be increased endurance rather than flat out top speed - although you'll probably find more speed comes along as part of your training.
You'll probably have a clear goal, maybe finishing an event is a certain time bracket or being able to finish with your friends, but it will be definable and measurable. Endurance cycling comes with a range of challenges, notable a nutrition and hydration strategy for the event itself but also you'll want a training plan that's more engaging than just riding mile after mile.
Sitting in the same position on a bike all day, or for several days on the bounce, takes it's toll. Firstly, you're going to need to be in the right position for you and secondly, you're going to need good core strength - not something you can achieve by just riding a bike.
Structure might be less important to you but you are still going to near a clear and engaging training plan. Fundamentally it’s about finding something that suits you, the rider, and not me, the coach whilst fitting around your 'non-cycling' life. Work, family and other commitments understandably limit our time.
